We won the toss and elected to bat first, opening with James Davies and Ed Foulds. They started us off nicely, reaching 29 before Ed (13) was caught on the square-leg boundary and then James (20) fell next. Jasper Dennison (8) came in at number 3 and played with composure before being bowled from a ball that kept low. Evan Bownes, Jacob Tomlinson, Mike Cox and Callum McCarthy all batted time to resume stability as part of our middle order. Evan eventually fell for a quality 31, which was vital and was the top score in our innings. As wickets fell, the innings came to a close with captain Hayden Cox (17) and debutant Imogen Bownes at the crease. We posted 148-8 from the full 40 overs, and it was believed to be a good and defendable score.
Jasper (9 overs, 1-27) and Ed (9 overs, 3-16) were trusted to open up the bowling attack. Jasper struck with the second ball which took us off to a great start and Ed then dismissed their number 3, with help from Evan who took a very sharp catch behind the stumps. Ed then got another, reducing Retford to 21-3. Hayden Cox replaced Jasper after his spell and bowled 5 overs with the reward of one wicket. Another debutant, Eadie Walker, bowled 5 superb overs going for just 15 runs but without reward. Imogen came on too, bowling 4 great overs finishing with brilliant figures of 4 overs 1-15. Both Eadie and Imogen bowled excellent areas with every ball and fielded very well too. Jasper came on for a second spell but didn't get any wickets this time around.
Now, it was getting tight with Retford at 80-4 and their number 5 with his eye in the game. However, with 14 overs left Ed came back on and took his final wicket - finishing with excellent figures. Our third and final debutant, Jack Birch, bowled two nice overs and managed to pick up his maiden senior wicket - congratulations and well done! Hayden also came back on for another spell and dismissed the dangerous number 5 (61), and then got the last two wickets - finishing with excellent figures of 9 overs 4-31. Retford CC 118 all out, CPCC win by 30 runs and get the 20 points.
Great effort by the whole team, but especially our 8 juniors playing today - including the three debutants Imogen Bownes, Eadie Walker and Jack Birch.
Next Sunday, the team play against Sheffield Sunrisers CC at home from 1:30pm.
