What a day out at Retford for the 3rds... Losing the toss on a crumbling track we started the game brilliantly! Our fielding and bowling for the 1st hour was perhaps the best I've seen from the young guns to date! Zak bowled nicely and picked up a pressure built wicket, Lily at the other end bowled fantastic and took 2 in 2 finishing with figures of 2 fer 12 off 7 overs!! We attacked the ball and arrow like zipped the ball back into the gloves keeping the Retford batsmen honest. Retford had 2 juniors which in fairness they've allowed to play, between them they had a 60 run partnership and great to see Jnr v Jnr battle.... The future of our game!
We eventually broke that partnership up which brought experience back who smashed the ball to all parts! 5 balls later I was hoping they'd declare but no such luck... Callum bowled brilliantly and picked up a 2 fer, the other wicket taken was the returning Owen Morris who picked up 3 awful wickets. Retford ended 276 fer 8.
What a learning curve for our young lads, a mini chat with the team before tea lifted the spirits... We was brilliant and learnt some much with me talking to every single bowler on how we improve next time... Love my role with these kids..
Our response started off OK but we lost wickets at crucial periods, the partnership came from highly unlikely sources Steve Tomo Tomlinson and the square cut King Owen Morris! Steve's best ever score of 30 was brilliant to watch and Owen remained unbeaten on 40 as the umpire decided to call it a day with us stranded on 170 fer 7 with 10 overs remaining.
Proud today that we dug deep, stayed in the game when our backs were against the walls... Retford was gutted to come away with 1 point more than us, perhaps they should of declared!! Some great spirit in our team and we are learning every week.... We'll done guys
