We lost our first toss of the season and were put in to bat by the hosts, who are currently sitting in 2nd place in the league.
In difficult and testing conditions, we started steadily before losing Steve Sleight (4) at 18-1. Wadworth & Harworth CC then ripped through our middle order, as we fell to 41-6! Matt Lyon (15) was the only batsmen in our top 6 to reach double figures - it wasn’t looking good! However, this quick succession of wickets, allowed for our match winners, Callum Edwards (23) & Evan Bownes (22), to take to the crease. Together, they put 42 runs on the scoreboard in 49 balls, a great performance especially when taking the conditions in to account. Tim Beer (17) added valuable runs at the end of our innings, before falling in the final over. We finished on 113 all out, from 39.3 overs.
But the question was, "is this defendable?"
We opened our bowling attack with Jasper Dennison (3-9 off 7) and Dan Fotheringham (2-9 off 6), who reduced Wadworth & Harworth CC to 18-5 with two fantastic bowling spells! Our first change bowlers, Tim Beer (2-8 off 7) and Finlay Allison (2-14 off 6), were both rewarded for their great line and length bowling with 2 wickets each. Callum Edwards pulled the final straw for Wadworth & Harworth CC, as they finished on 41 all out from 26.2 overs. A highlight in the field was Evan Bownes' two unbelievable catches, one of which was taken one handed, inches from the ground. Special mention to Charlie Shelton for his encouragement, liveliness and bundles of energy in the field, which makes a massive difference to our team's spirit.
Our young players, the future of CPCC, were the key in this game, all playing with a smile on their face and clearly loving the game.
Next weekend, we hope to build on this win as the 2nd XI hosts Anston CC.
