On another day, it would have been a different story.

Once again, I won the toss & decided to have a bowl.

Our opening bowlers performed absolutely brilliantly, restricting Bawtry to 20 odd for 1 after 14 overs. Zak Berridge getting the thoroughly deserved breakthrough wicket - this was the best I've seen him bowl and on another day he could have had 3 or 4 to his name. At the other end, Evan Bownes was equally as impressive, bowling a nice spell.
Bawtry's opener had, what seemed like, 9 lives! We dropped him 3 times, with Tim Beer shelling one at point early doors and Jasper unable to get a grasp of a difficult chance at mid wicket... But the biggest (and I mean biggest) of all dollies was shelled by the one and only - me!!! As you can imagine, our great supporters, David Bownes and Paul Berridge, were very consoling! They had Lee Moore on speed dial, while chanting "skipper out".
Anyway, on with the game, and we finally got their opener (57) after he was bowled by Callum Edwards, who bowled very well (8 overs, 25-3). Tim and I also chipped in with three late wickets between us. Bawtry ended on 164-8 after their 40 overs. On another day we could have had them all out for 90, but it wasn’t to be today. Special mention to Charlie Shelton, who was absolutely brilliant in the field, not only for saving many runs but also for his brilliant encouragement of our young guns!!! Oh, and just to let you know I dropped another (I had a shocker)!!! In true 2nd XI style, everyone who could bowl did.

Now for our reply... We batted very well as a unit, with Matt Lyon continuing as the club's leading run scorer for a nice 22 before being caught. Charlie Shelton also played some beautiful shots before holing out at mid on. Evan Bownes and Dan Fotheringham, as part of the middle order, batted over 15 overs together and impressively, Dan carried his bat to the very end.

Unfortunately, we fell short, but on the bright side we again managed to bat for the full 40 overs - ending on 101-7. As a team, we are improving week on week, especially the juniors which is not only great to see but is also great for the sustainability & future of CPCC.

We go again next week, away at Blidworth Colliery Welfare CC.
