CPCC 1st XI beaten by Harthill
By Owen Jervis
Clumber beaten in close encounter at local rivals.
The 1sts suffered a heart breaking defeat in a topsy-turvy game against old foes Harthill. The pitch looked drier than a Frenchman's mouth after a heavy night on the Bordeaux and garlic snails. Whoever won the toss was going to be in the box seat. Harthill did, batted first and laid a good foundation at 88-3. However, we fought back and reduced them to 113-7, before Cummings steered them to 154. Not a bad score on the surface but a decent effort from us to keep them to that after their bright start. Still, I think wedve all been happier chasing 130 odd. James 3-19, me 3-38, Luke 3-46 and Hayden 1-28 took the wickets. Special mention for a great one handed catch from Charlie!
Tea. Not bad. Not the same woman doing it, although she did come down later to watch. She used to do a good trifle, you know. Her husband is actually one of the decent ones at harthill. Quite quick in the field for an older chap. Anyway, I digress...
Our reply got off to a start that could probably be best described as 'pretty shite' as we slumped to 36-4. From this point though James and Luke batted superbly taking us to 123 before Luke fell for 32. I fell quickly after and then James went -cruelly trapped by a grubber - for a superb 65. 7 down, 20 odd still needed. Charlie (17) almost got us home but it wasn't to be and we fell 5 runs short, all out for 149. Given the heavy defeats in recent weeks there was some bite and fight in the side so let's keep positive and keep on keeping on. Skipper James was MOTM, outstanding with bat and ball. Well done mate, leading from the front. On a personal note, it was great to see Rixxy as I've not seen him in ages. He took a nasty blow on the hand in the field and had to bat 11 one handed. Cricketing gods not on our side as without that injury he could have led us home. Onward and Upward! X
